Can I combine my previous benefits with the ERPF or another LGPS Fund?

Whether or not your benefits are linked automatically or you have to elect to have them linked depends on what type of benefits you have and what period of membership those benefits relate to.

If your rejoin the ERPF and your previous benefits are also held within the ERPF then we will write to you with your options as soon as we are made aware that you have left and rejoined.

If you rejoin with ERPF and your benefits are with another LGPS fund then you will need to let us know about these benefits so that we can contact your former fund for the details we need to be able to let you know what options you have.

You can let us know about any previous LGPS membership by completing our Previous Pension Right (PPR) Form, which you should have received in your welcome pack.  If you did not receive a form or you cannot find it then you can complete our online form below:

We have put together a brief guide to the options that may be available to you when you rejoin the scheme, which can be viewed by downloading the PDF below:

Please note: if you became entitled to your previous benefit as a result of opting out of the scheme after 10 April 2015, you will not be permitted to join your two periods of membership together.

If you have membership in the scheme before 1 April 2014 then you will have some final salary benefits but these are not always brought into your new membership as final salary benefits, sometimes they are converted into CARE pension and your final salary link is lost.  If this applies to you this will be explained in the options sent to you.

Can I transfer my benefits to another Public Sector employer?

Many public sector schemes, but not all, are members of the transfer Club which is a special arrangement that means the benefits you get from the ERPF closely matches the benefits you built up in your former scheme.

A transfer needs to be completed within 12 months of you joining the LGPS.

Although it is possible to ask your employer to extend this deadline, an extension is very rarely granted.

Even if an extension is granted, if your previous scheme participates in the Club, you will lose the right to have your previous benefits transferred under Club rules after 12 months.

A transfer can be accepted from another registered pension scheme (approved by HM Revenue & Customs) or a European pension’s institution but a transfer cannot be accepted in respect of pension credit rights awarded as part of a Pension Sharing Order.

We recommend that you seek Independent Financial Advice from a qualified Independent Financial Adviser (IFA) before making any decisions about your pension benefits.
